Taraba state Governor, Arc. Darius Dickson today laid a foundation of Jalingo primary water supply scheme at Dadinkowa – Sabongari, Jalingo as part of activities marking his one year in office.
The governor who described today’s event as a memorable one stated that the project is meant to improve water supply in Jalingo, and that theproject is expected to gulp about 5.8 million Naira.
He maintained that water is of highest priority in his administration. This informed his decision to upscale the water intervention of the African Development Bank, which was supposed to have been started since 2008 but could not commence until 2012.
The Governor stressed that because of the peaceful atmosphere that exists in Taraba state, there was an influx of people to the state due to the activities of Boko Haram (insurgency), which became prevalent in some parts of the North Eastern States and it is important for the state government to improve on the existing water supply in the state.
Accordingly, Governor Darius Ishaku disclosed that when the project is completed it will be able to supply the state capital and it’s environs with about 26 million litres of water per day.
He also explained that the project includes the construction of infiltration gallery and pumping station on River Lamurde at Saminaka, transmission lines of 3.4 kilometer to deliver water to the reservoirs on Jalingo hill.
Also included in the construction works, are water treatment facilities, construction of additional pipelines covering over 150 kilometers within Jalingo and environs and the erection of additional state-of the-art water tower on Jalingo hill.
Darius Ishaku commended the State Ministry of water resources for its commitment and determination in identifying a reputable construction company, SCC Nigeria Limited, as well as keying into the state Government vision of providing portable drinking water to the people of the state by working relentlessly to see to the commencement of this giangantic project. He assured the Ministry of his continuous support to its logical conclusion.
He also informed the gathering that about 29 towns and villages have so far benefited from water supply in their areas cutting across about 15 local government councils in the state through consistent release of funds to the state water supply agency for repair and maintenance to enhance regular water supply.
Also achieved within this one year included the repairs of broken down water plants, supply of equipment in all water stations on assumption of office, visit to the country Director of AFDB for collaboration and partnership towards meeting the state developmental stride, payment of counterpart fund to JICA drilling rig which have been lying dormant for over two years, the drilling of 100 boreholes in communities across the state, purchase of high-class modern laboratory equipment for water quality control.
- Equally, within this period water treatment chemicals has been used to ensure good quality water that is safe for the people.
- 500 water pumps to boost and support irrigation and dry season farming most especially in the area of rice farming will also been purchased.
- Two boreholes to supply water to the green house at college of agriculture covering a distance of 3 kilometers and the reactivation of mini supply system to the presidential Lodge has been constructed.
Earlier in his speech, the Commissioner of water resources, Barr. Emmanuel Yakubu Gowon described the foundation laying ceremony as unique and important in the lives of people in Jalingo and environs, stressing that water supply in the state capital will be greatly improved.
Emmanuel Gowon commended the state government for the wonderful support it has accorded the Ministry within this period which culminated in the successes recorded by the Ministry, pointing out that dry season farming is yielding the desired support with cluster of farmers going into dry season rice farming.
He assured the Governor that the Ministry will continue to support his initiative and said at the Ministry of water resources will sleep and wake with the idea of supplying clean water to all and sundry in Jalingo.
High point of the event was:
- The ground breaking foundation laying ceremony of Dadinkowa primary water supply scheme,
- Distribution of water pumping machines to cooperatives societies that specialises in dry season farming,
- Commissioning of two trucks of sanitation vehicles and other sanitation components as well as
- The commissioning of a 33 KVA transformer dedicated to the Jalingo water supply Agency and a playlet by the Taraba state cultural troupe.
The event was witnessed by the state Deputy Governor, Haruna Manu, Speaker, Taraba state house of Assembly, Hon. Peter Abel Diah, members of the Taraba state House of Assembly, Commissioners and all top government functionaries in the state.
Taraba state Governor, Arch. Darius Dickson has revealed that his administration will soon send one hundred youths for training in Israel in the field of Agriculture.
Governor Darius Ishaku said this today during the flagged off the state win a trip to Israel, WATTI, at the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN secretariat Jalingo, explaining that those that will be trained are expected to key into the ongoing green house project as well as become productive members of the society.
He praised the ingenuity of the executive secretary of the National Christian Pilgrims Commission NCPC, Reverend Kennedy Opara for the wonderful job he is doing in the Commission, pointing out that despite the economic melt down, he has kept on dreaming dreams and is the reason why the Commission is standing tall and bubbling with ideas.
Darius Ishaku stated that the win a trip to Israel is a wonderful innovation and assured the Executive secretary of Taraba State Government support at all times so that the commission will be able to send many Christians to the holy land.
In his speech, the Executive Secretary of the National Christian Pilgrims Commission NCPC, said the WATTI project is aimed at reducing over dependence on government for sponsorship to the Holy land.
Kennedy Opara disclosed that a ticket cost five hundred Naira, stressing that with just five hundred Naira, a person who is successful in the lottery, a trip to Israel is assured at no extra cost.
He encouraged all Christians to support and participate in the programme, saying that the project is primarily designed to have more Christians visit the holy land and added that everything “ we do in life must cost us something”.
The Executive Secretary assured the gathering that the process will be very transparent and also used the opportunity to call on Tarabans to support Arch. Darius Dickson Ishaku to succeed in the state, averring that God brought him on board to make a difference.
Delivering his sermon during the event, Rev. Innocent Solomon praised the charismatic leadership of NCPC Executive Secretary and stated that the vision to give more Christians an opportunity to visit the holy land is a vision that is inspired by God.
The clergy disclosed that lottery or casting lots is found in the bible, explaining that it was an acceptable way of making choice and supported his argument from the book of Isaiah 2:2 and Joshua 8:10 and challenged Christians to support the vision so that it will stand the test of time.
In appreciating the programme, the state Chairman of Taraba state Christian pilgrims Welfare Board, Rev. Isaiah Magaji Jirapye said the WATTI programme is the beginning of good things that will begin to come out from the NCPC and beckoned on Christians to support and sustain the initiative.
High point of the event was the lottery proper that was started by the state Governor, Arch. Darius Dickson Ishaku who picked the name of Mrs. Safira Ben as the first successful candidate while His wife Barrister Anna Ishaku picked the second successful candidate, Mrs. Wabuji Ezekiel.
Prayers for the state, the state Governor and his family and for the success of the Win a Trip to Israel WATTI, was offered by Rev. Dr. Ben Ube, Taraba state CAN Chairman.
Our correspondent reports that Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku also purchased 1000 raffle tickets for each of the 16 Local Government Areas of the State to participate in the WATTI lottery.
Wife of the Taraba State Governor, Barr. Anna Darius Ishaku has called on Tarabans to continue in prayers for the peace of the land in order to achieve development.
Barr. Ishaku made this call Yesterday at her Hope Afresh Foundation Office, Jalingo when various groups paid her a courtesy visit.
The Governor’s wife who stated that the Governor has always asked for peace in exchange for development noted that, silent killings and unrest in some parts of the state has to a large extent interfered with some of her planned outreaches.
She called on the gathering to pray for the peace of the land and those passing through trying moments as well should be ambassadors of peace where ever they find themselves.
She further encouraged the groups to engage in training for skills acquisition, stressing that it is wrong for a degree holder to be idle, adding that trainings are available to those who are interested, urging them to also take advantage of each other’s comparative strengths.
Earlier in their separate speeches, the various groups appreciated her Excellency for her impact in the lives of Tarabans especially the less privileged and prayed God to grant her long life, wisdom, sound health and the resources to continue the good works.
Most of the groups who stated that their vision was the same as that of the Hope Afresh Foundation pledged total support to all its activities, encouraging her to be a pillar to them as well as give them motherly advice when necessary.
The groups further appreciated God for the victories of the State as well as wished the first family a happy 1 year in office anniversary in advance.
Highlights of the event include presentation of gifts to the Governor’s wife.
The groups present were, the Women of Divine Target, Legal Aids Community Development Service, YES Teens Forum, God’s Own Evangelistic and Discipleship Ministry and the Quintessential Business Women and Youth Association.
Children in Taraba have been told to work hard to be achievers whose impact would help to end violence and restore peace to Taraba and Nigeria at large.
This charge was given today by the wife of the Taraba state Governor, Barr. Anna Ishaku at theNational Children’s Day celebration organised by the Taraba State Ministry for Women Affairs and Child Development.
Barr. Anna lamented that children of this generation have witnessed so much violence compared to those of the previous generation.
She explained that casting her mind back at her childhood and the innocent bliss they all enjoyed, it was with a heavy heart that she watched the match past and prayed that peace be restored to all parts of the world so that children can experience the peace they deserve.
While stressing that this year’s Children’s Day celebration is marked with the theme; ‘’Protect the right of the child in the face of violence and insecurity, end child marriage’’ she emphasized the need for all citizens to work together to end all forms of violence and injustice to children.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Child Development, Mrs Loise Emmanuel in her welcome address disclosed that the day is a happy day because it is a joyful one for the children worldwide. She urged parents to do more in taking care of their children.
She commended the current administration for fully embracing the children of the state. According to her, her ministry had achieved and done a lot in enhancing child security by liaising with relevant Federal and state agencies in the last one year. She stated that this effort has led to a significant reduction in the rate of crimes against children.
She also called on the Government at all levels to formulate policies that will improve the living conditions, health care needs and educational development of children. Recalling the history of Children’s Day celebration which dates back to 1964, she stated that it is a day to show children love and give them a sense of belonging dignity and honour.
Also, the wife of the former speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, Mrs. Christy Useni in her goodwill message urged children to shun all forms of vices and avoid bad groups which can make them commit crimes. She also urged the children to work hard in their studies so they can be good leaders of tomorrow.
Highlight of the day was the presentation of prices to the winners of the day and the presentation of the Zenith Bank scholarship awards to deserving customers.
